Foxconn begins iPhone 17 production at $2.8 billion Bengaluru facility

Foxconn has officially initiated production at its newly established facility in Devanahalli, Bengaluru, focusing on the iPhone 17. This plant marks the company's second-largest manufacturing site outside of China, with an impressive investment of $2.8 billion (approximately ₹25,000 crore). The launch faced challenges early on when a significant number of Chinese engineers returned home unexpectedly, causing a temporary halt in operations. Nevertheless, Foxconn swiftly addressed this issue by bringing in experts from Taiwan and other areas to ensure the production line could resume swiftly. M B Patil, Karnataka’s Minister for Commerce and Industries, expressed enthusiasm about this development, stating, "I am pleased to announce that Foxconn has started production of the latest iPhone 17 at its new manufacturing facility in Devanahalli. This milestone not only signifies the assembly of smartphones but also highlights Karnataka’s growing status as a global electronics manufacturing hub. It is set to create thousands of jobs and enhance supply chains, bolstering India’s export goals." Apple is rapidly increasing its manufacturing output in India, aiming to produce 60 million iPhones this year, a significant rise from the 35-40 million units anticipated for 2024-25. In the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, Apple reportedly assembled 60% more iPhones in India, valued at around $22 billion. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, emphasized the rising significance of India within Apple’s global supply chain. He revealed that most iPhones sold in the U.S. in June 2025 were made in India, with all units sold during that quarter shipped from Indian facilities. Apple's performance in the Indian market has been robust, with iPhone sales increasing by 21.5% year-on-year to 5.9 million units in the first half of 2025. The iPhone 16 emerged as the most popular model. In the June quarter, the company experienced a growth of 19.7% in iPhone shipments compared to the previous year, capturing a 7.5% share of the Indian smartphone market, according to the latest IDC data.
