Tech company CTO and others indicted for exporting Nvidia chips to China

A recent crackdown by U.S. authorities on illegal chip exports to China has led to the indictment of four individuals involved in a conspiracy to illegally ship Nvidia chips. This significant legal action was initiated following an unsealed indictment in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida. The indictment identifies two U.S. citizens and two Chinese nationals residing in the United States. According to John Eisenberg, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department’s National Security Division, the defendants are accused of orchestrating a scheme that involved falsifying documents and creating fake contracts to mislead U.S. authorities while exporting Nvidia GPUs to China. The individuals facing charges include Hon Ning Ho (also known as Mathew Ho), a U.S. citizen originally from Hong Kong residing in Tampa, Florida; Brian Curtis Raymond, a U.S. citizen from Huntsville, Alabama; Cham Li (also known as Tony Li), a national from the People's Republic of China living in San Leandro, California; and Jing Chen (also known as Harry Chen), another PRC national in Tampa on an F-1 visa. These suspects are charged with multiple offenses, including conspiracy to violate the Export Control Reform Act of 2018, smuggling, and money laundering. If convicted, they face significant prison sentences and may have to forfeit millions in profits. The indictment reveals that the conspirators received nearly $3.9 million from Chinese companies for their illegal activities. Notably, Raymond briefly served as the chief technology officer for Corvex, a Virginia-based company specializing in AI cloud computing, which is preparing for a public offering. His association with Corvex was highlighted in a recent press release, underscoring the gravity of the charges against him and the implications for the tech industry.
