Formula 1 is deploying new jargon for 2026

Formula 1 is gearing up for a significant technical overhaul in 2026, introducing fresh jargon that fans and teams alike will need to embrace. The sport is notorious for its specialized language, swapping common terms for unique expressions—"box" is used instead of pit, and "power unit" refers to the engine and hybrid system. As the new regulations approach, the lexicon is evolving once again. Next season's cars will feature a lighter and narrower design compared to their predecessors, marking a pivotal shift in the sport's engineering. The minimum weight will drop by 30 kg, bringing it down to 724 kg, while the wheelbase will be shortened by 200 mm to 3,400 mm. Additionally, the underfloor dimensions will be reduced by 150 mm, and the front wing will be narrower by 100 mm, now consisting of just two elements. In a historic first, the front wing will become an active component, working synchronously with a newly designed three-element active rear wing. Previously, active rear wings were utilized through the Drag Reduction System (DRS) introduced in 2011, allowing drivers to reduce drag when close to an opponent. However, the upcoming regulations bring a fundamental change in functionality. The new "Straight Mode" will enable drivers to lower both front and rear wings to minimize drag on designated straights, without the requirement of being in proximity to another vehicle. In contrast, a "Corner Mode" will raise the wings to enhance downforce, facilitating faster cornering. These new terms replace the previous temporary designations of X-mode and Z-mode, reflecting a more engaging approach to F1 terminology.
