SpaceX alumni building remote-controlled construction equipment land $115 million fund round

In a bold move toward reshaping the construction landscape with an eye on space, TerraFirma, a startup created by ex-SpaceX engineers, announced it has secured $115 million in a recent funding round. The investment comes from notable firms including Kleiner Perkins, Bain Capital Ventures, and defense technology companies such as SpaceX, Anduril, and Hadrian. Based in Austin, TerraFirma is innovating the construction sector by utilizing remote-controlled equipment operated through familiar interfaces like Xbox controllers. This approach not only enhances operational safety but also significantly reduces costs. CEO and co-founder Noah Schochet articulated the company’s ambitious vision, stating, "Infrastructure is a bottleneck to basically every single industry that needs to innovate over the next couple of decades." The startup's long-term aspirations include establishing infrastructure on Mars. Schochet emphasized the need for integrating advanced technology into the construction industry, which he believes has lagged behind other sectors. With the latest funding, TerraFirma plans to expand its workforce by hiring 300 employees over the next year and constructing a factory and mission control center in Texas. TerraFirma is part of a burgeoning network of startups emerging from SpaceX, all aiming to tap into the growing opportunities within the space economy. Other notable ventures launched by former SpaceX employees include Castelion, a maker of hypersonic weapons, and Relativity Space. The recent $86 billion IPO of SpaceX, alongside NASA's initiatives to establish bases on the Moon and Mars, has ignited hope and investment in the space sector. Schochet and co-founder Noah McGuinness, who met during their engineering studies at Princeton University, draw on their experiences at SpaceX, where they faced numerous challenges in building and scaling operations. Reflecting on their time at SpaceX, the founders noted the intense environment, which often led to long hours and difficult working conditions. Yet, they view that experience as invaluable in shaping their vision for TerraFirma. Currently, the company is focused on demonstrating its technology on Earth with projects that include constructing a sports arena and a Starbucks. However, they remain committed to bidding for future lunar construction projects as they keep their eyes on the ultimate goal of building infrastructure beyond Earth. As Schochet wisely pointed out, the challenge lies in not wanting to build a community around a non-existent space economy. Instead, he advocates for creating foundations based on the economic realities that drive today’s world.
