Roelof Botha joins SpaceX’s board of directors

Roelof Botha, the former managing partner at Sequoia Capital, has been appointed to SpaceX’s board of directors, marking a significant addition just days after the company achieved the largest initial public offering (IPO) in history. This announcement was made in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday, which detailed that Botha is stepping in to fill a vacancy on the board and will serve until the upcoming annual shareholder meeting. In addition to his board position, Botha will also become a member of the audit committee. Botha's extensive experience with public companies and his background in audit committees were highlighted in SpaceX’s filing, emphasizing his qualifications as he joins the board. Botha's professional journey includes a brief time working alongside SpaceX's founder and CEO, Elon Musk, at PayPal in 2000. Their careers intersected during a transformative period for the payments company, as Botha joined in March of that year and Musk was ousted as CEO by September. With Botha's appointment, SpaceX’s board now consists of nine directors. He joins an impressive lineup of individuals, including Musk’s allies Ira Ehrenpreis, Antonio Gracias, Steve Jurvetson, and Luke Nosek, along with Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX’s chief operating officer, Google executive Donald Harrison, and venture capitalist Randy Glein.
