
Jim Bridenstine, who served as NASA administrator from 2018, has taken a significant step back into the realm of military aerospace. Prior to his NASA tenure, Bridenstine was a naval aviator and represented Oklahoma in Congress for three terms, gaining experience on the Committee on Armed Services. Now, he is set to lead Quantum Space, a Maryland-based firm focused on creating advanced maneuverable spacecraft. In a recent interview, Bridenstine emphasized that national security in space is a top priority for Quantum Space. The company is currently developing a spacecraft known as Ranger, which is comparable in size to a Volkswagen Beetle before its solar panels unfurl. Ranger is designed to provide the military with unprecedented maneuvering capabilities, operating from low-Earth orbit to geostationary orbit and even into cislunar space. Equipped with 4,000 kg of hydrazine propellant, Ranger aims for rapid maneuverability. "This is high energy," Bridenstine explained, noting that the fuel is consumed quickly. Importantly, Ranger also has the ability to refuel itself and assist in refueling other spacecraft, enhancing its operational versatility. Bridenstine pointed out that the U.S. Space Force is eager to adopt new in-space maneuvering technologies. He is confident that Ranger's sizeable fuel capacity, refueling capabilities, and unique "multi-mode" technology—allowing it to switch between high-thrust and high-efficiency operations—will meet these needs. Furthermore, Quantum Space recently acquired Phase Four to bolster its technological capabilities. Looking ahead, the military has significant plans for Ranger. Quantum Space has already secured a contract supporting the LASSO program with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which aims to develop spacecraft capable of orbiting the Moon at very low altitudes—potentially as close as 10 km to the lunar surface—to assess water concentration on the Moon. Additionally, the company is involved in the Oracle-P program with the Air Force Research Lab to create advanced space situational awareness capabilities in cislunar space. Quantum Space is also among the contenders for the $6.2 billion Andromeda program, which focuses on developing surveillance and reconnaissance satellites, further solidifying its role in enhancing U.S. military operations in space.
