In the wake of rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, former HDFC CEO Aditya Puri has expressed skepticism regarding the prevalent fears of mass job displacement. During a discussion with Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy, Puri emphasized that much of the anxiety surrounding AI's impact on employment is exaggerated. Puri commented on the hype surrounding AI, stating, "There is too much hype on AI and what it can do and how quickly it can do it. Correspondingly, there's too much negativity in terms of how many jobs will be lost." He recognized that while change is on the horizon, broad predictions of job losses are unwarranted. "Will some jobs be lost? Yes. Will new jobs be created? Yes," he clarified, suggesting that rather than fearing job losses, professionals should focus on reskilling for new opportunities. Highlighting the emergence of new job roles, Puri pointed out that there is currently a high demand for positions like prompters, which reflect the ongoing adaptation to AI technologies. He stated, "Total replacement is not going to happen," underscoring the notion that AI will work in tandem with human workers rather than completely replacing them. Puri also differentiated between basic rule-based AI systems and more sophisticated models, asserting that while AI will evolve, it will not render human contribution obsolete. He mentioned, "It's going to take a decade or two" for AI to fully integrate into various sectors, including banking. Narayana Murthy shared his insights as well, noting that using generative AI has improved productivity in his own work. He encouraged young professionals to embrace these technologies, stating that mastering AI tools will lead to better outcomes. "The world will not end for smart and hardworking people," he affirmed. When discussing the potential for an 'AI-first' banking model, Puri acknowledged that while structural changes are inevitable, a revolution is unlikely. He outlined how AI could enhance marketing, customer interactions, and fraud detection in banking, but insisted that these changes will be gradual. Ultimately, he concluded that the focus should remain on providing customers with better products and services, regardless of the technology used.
