Ford to reveal more about its new low-cost electric vehicles on August 11

Ford is gearing up to share exciting details about its forthcoming budget-friendly electric vehicles during an event in Kentucky scheduled for August 11. The anticipation is palpable, with CEO Jim Farley declaring that this announcement represents a transformative moment for the company, likening it to the iconic Model T era. This bold statement comes on the heels of Ford's electric vehicle division reporting a staggering loss of approximately $1.3 billion in the second quarter of 2025. Sales for its flagship electric models, the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E, are experiencing a downturn, amid challenging market conditions for electric vehicles in the current political landscape. In February 2024, Farley disclosed the existence of a specialized team dedicated to developing a low-cost electric vehicle, led by former Tesla executive Alan Clarke. This team boasts an impressive roster of talent from industry giants such as Tesla, Rivian, Apple, and Lucid Motors. While Ford has remained somewhat tight-lipped regarding specific details, it has confirmed that the initial vehicle from this new, cost-effective platform will be a mid-size pickup truck, expected to debut in 2027. Ford also plans to create a variety of vehicle styles catering to both retail and commercial clients on this new platform, promising personalized digital experiences for users. As the market for affordable electric vehicles in the U.S. remains sparse, with few options available at or below $30,000, Ford's entry could significantly alter the competitive landscape when these vehicles finally launch in two years. In the meantime, Tesla is set to introduce a more basic Model Y SUV later this year, General Motors is reviving the Chevy Bolt in the coming year, and the startup Slate Auto—backed by Jeff Bezos—is preparing to release its own budget electric pickup by late 2026.
