Ford says “no exact date” to restart F-150 Lightning production

Ford's ambitious venture into the electric vehicle market with the F-150 Lightning, its top-selling pickup, may be encountering significant hurdles. While the Lightning's design closely mirrors its traditional counterparts, it boasts enhanced speed, efficiency, and performance that set it apart from gasoline and hybrid models. However, a recent report from The Wall Street Journal has raised concerns about the future of this electric truck. Ford's management is reportedly engaged in discussions that could lead to the discontinuation of the Lightning. Production was halted weeks ago due to an aluminum shortage caused by a devastating fire at a supplier's facility in New York. This incident is projected to cost Ford around $2 billion in losses. In response to speculation regarding the F-150 Lightning's fate, a Ford spokesperson stated, "The F-150 Lightning remains the best-selling electric pickup truck in the U.S., even with increasing competition from models like the CyberTruck, Chevy, GMC, Hummer, and Rivian, and we achieved record sales in the third quarter." Currently, the company's focus is on ramping up production of the traditional F-150 ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) and Hybrid models while they recover from the supply chain disruptions. Although Ford maintains adequate inventories of the Lightning, no specific timeline has been provided for when production will resume at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center (REVC). As the first major U.S. automaker to introduce a full-size electric pickup, Ford faces challenges similar to those of General Motors, which has also reduced its electric vehicle production. Stellantis has recently announced the halt of its all-electric Ram 1500 development. Looking ahead, Ford has decided to postpone the second-generation F-150 Lightning in favor of launching a more affordable and simpler electric pickup model, slated for 2027.
