TechCrunch Mobility: Ford’s big bet

Ford has announced a significant investment of $2 billion to revamp its Louisville Assembly Plant, aiming to produce a new range of affordable electric vehicles (EVs). This initiative will kick off with a midsize pickup truck, projected to hit the market in 2027 with a base price of $30,000. During the announcement, CEO Jim Farley candidly expressed the inherent risks associated with this project, stating, "There are no guarantees with this project. We’re doing so many new things, I can’t tell you with 100% certainty that this will all go just right; it is a bet. There is risk." This ambitious undertaking involves a specialized team that has been working for two years to devise a production line for affordable EVs that can be manufactured in the U.S. more efficiently and with fewer components, while still ensuring profitability. To achieve this, Ford is moving away from its traditional assembly methods, opting for a revolutionary three-pronged assembly line that leverages increased automation and unicastings. This approach, however, is uniquely tied to the design of the new vehicle, making it incompatible with the manufacturing techniques used for Ford’s existing lineup. The automotive giant faces mounting pressures from tariffs, slower-than-anticipated EV adoption rates, and increasing competition from Chinese manufacturers. Thus, this strategic shift is crucial for Ford to maintain its foothold in the industry. In a broader context, this venture represents a $5 billion experiment, encompassing $3 billion for a new LFP battery factory and $2 billion for the Louisville plant, all aimed at preserving American jobs. In other news, the rental car startup Kyte, once considered a formidable competitor to Hertz, has ceased operations, following a series of staff reductions and market limitations. After selling its customer database to Turo, Kyte has entered receivership in California, leaving many customers in limbo regarding their rentals. Additionally, Bumper, a U.K.-based buy now, pay later service for car repairs, successfully secured $10.8 million in Series B funding. In other funding news, Lagos-based food delivery startup Chowdeck raised $9 million, while Eve Air Mobility announced a $230 million capital raise. WeRide, a Chinese autonomous vehicle firm, has received an undisclosed investment from Grab to expedite its Level 4 robotaxi deployment. Meanwhile, the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program has resumed funding after a lengthy freeze, allowing states to access $5 billion for EV charging infrastructure. As the industry evolves, companies are making significant shifts. Revel, originally an electric scooter rental service, has pivoted away from ride-hailing in New York City to concentrate on its electric vehicle charging business. Meanwhile, Tesla has disbanded its Dojo AI training supercomputer team, redirecting its focus towards new AI chip developments. The transportation landscape continues to change dramatically, and industry stakeholders are keeping a close eye on these developments.
