With the resurgence of Formula 1 capturing public interest reminiscent of the 1960s, other motorsport disciplines are also experiencing a surge in popularity. Endurance racing events, such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Rolex 24 at Daytona, have seen unprecedented attendance, thanks in part to the thrilling sports prototype class, featuring prominent manufacturers like Ferrari and Porsche. Ford is gearing up to join this elite group, announcing its entry into the World Endurance Championship's Hypercar class, set to debut in 2027. Currently, the Hypercar class boasts competitors from eight different manufacturers, including Alpine, Aston Martin, BMW, Cadillac, Ferrari, Peugeot, Porsche, and Toyota. The excitement doesn’t stop there; Genesis is also set to join the competition next year. Ford has recently shared more insights regarding its racing ambitions. Unlike the GT3 category, which utilizes vehicles based on road cars, the Hypercar class features purpose-built prototypes designed exclusively for racing. This class is structured around two technical rule sets aimed at maintaining a competitive balance among various designs. In brief, the Hypercar category includes LMH (Le Mans Hypercars) and LMDh (Le Mans Daytona h). LMH vehicles are crafted entirely by manufacturers and have the option to incorporate hybrid technology, exemplified by the V12-only Aston Martin Valkyrie. On the other hand, LMDh cars must adhere to a more standardized framework, utilizing a carbon fiber chassis sourced from one of four approved manufacturers, along with a shared transmission, hybrid battery, and electric motor, allowing companies to innovate in their bodywork and combustion engine design. While the LMH category offers greater technical flexibility, it comes with increased costs, presenting a challenge for manufacturers aiming for overall victory in endurance racing. Ford's commitment to in-house development for its racing program signals a bold step into this competitive arena, promising to elevate its legacy in motorsport.
