Ford EV sales fall 31% while hybrids rise

In the second quarter of 2025, Ford experienced a significant 31% decline in electric vehicle sales across the United States, largely attributed to a steep drop in E-Transit van transactions and waning interest in the F-150 Lightning. The automaker managed to sell just 38,988 electric vehicles so far this year, marking a nearly 12% decrease compared to the same timeframe in 2024. This downturn occurs despite an overall increase in sales, bolstered by Ford's strategic employee pricing initiatives in response to looming automotive tariffs. The landscape for electric vehicle sales in the U.S. is becoming increasingly daunting. Compounding the challenges, the Trump administration is considering the removal of federal tax incentives and subsidies for electric vehicles. Even competitors like Hyundai have reported declines; their Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 models saw decreases of 12% and 8%, respectively. Kia also struggled, facing considerable drops in sales for its EV9 and EV6 models. As Ford prepares for the release of its quarterly sales figures, the outlook remains uncertain. The Mustang Mach-E saw a nearly 20% year-over-year sales drop, with only 10,178 units sold, while F-150 Lightning sales plummeted by 26%, totaling just 5,842 units. Furthermore, E-Transit van sales fell dramatically to 418, down from 3,410 during the same quarter in 2024, a decline attributed to larger fleet orders placed earlier in the year. Previously, the automotive sector had benefitted from buyers rushing to make purchases in anticipation of forthcoming tariffs, but that momentum appears to have dissipated for Ford's electric offerings, which are increasingly seen as outdated. The Mustang Mach-E debuted in late 2020, while the F-150 Lightning was introduced in mid-2022. Although Ford is developing a more affordable line of electric vehicles, including a small truck, these models are not expected to hit the market until 2027.
