US jobs too important to risk Chinese car imports, says Ford CEO

Ford's CEO, Jim Farley, voiced serious concerns about the potential threat that Chinese vehicle imports pose to nearly one million jobs in the United States. In a recent interview with Fox News, Farley discussed the implications of rising car prices and intensified global competition, emphasizing that China's expansive production capacity could easily accommodate the 16 million vehicles sold annually in the U.S., leaving ample room for additional production. Farley highlighted that Chinese automakers benefit from substantial government support, enabling them to produce an extra 21 million vehicles each year on top of the anticipated 29 million that are expected to be manufactured in China by 2026. He stated, "They have enough capacity in China to cover all the manufacturing, all the vehicle sales in the United States," underscoring the importance of domestic manufacturing. He further expressed the critical role of manufacturing in the U.S. economy, warning that losing such exports would have dire consequences. Additionally, Farley raised cybersecurity concerns regarding vehicles from China, noting their advanced technology, including multiple cameras capable of collecting extensive data. While he acknowledged the strengths of Chinese electric vehicles, like the Xiaomi SU7, he expressed confidence in Ford's upcoming affordable electric vehicles, which are set to launch from their Kentucky plant next year. Addressing the average 2 percent increase in new car prices over the past year, Farley asserted that Ford collaborated with the administration to mitigate the impacts of tariffs imposed during the Trump era, positioning the F-150’s sales as evidence of the brand's value in a competitive market.
