Ford is focusing on efficiency to make its 2027 $30,000 EV pickup affordable

Following the cessation of the full-size F-150 Lightning production, the company is gearing up to launch its innovative "Universal EV Platform" next year. This platform will debut with a midsize truck priced at an attractive $30,000, contingent on successful development. Ford has established an internal team dedicated to creating this cost-effective platform from the ground up. The goal is to enhance efficiency by minimizing component count and optimizing energy use, enabling the vehicle to travel further on less power. In the past, Ford and other manufacturers focused on appealing to full-size pickup enthusiasts with features like instant torque and low operating costs. However, many consumers found themselves deterred by the reduced towing capacity and the significant price increases driven by supply chain issues and dealer markups. As a result, Ford has faced nearly $20 billion in losses as these strategies faltered. Recognizing the need for change, Ford is shifting its focus away from pricier full-size models toward a more accessible midsize truck, offering a spacious interior that rivals vehicles like the Toyota RAV4. The success of this venture hinges on the company’s ability to utilize a smaller battery, which is a significant cost driver, accounting for about 40% of the vehicle's price.
