The suit argues that minors have become dependent on an AI tool that pretends to show empathy while collecting their personal data without parental guidance. This lawsuit follows a criminal investigation launched by the Florida Attorney General's office in April, aimed at uncovering ChatGPT's involvement in a mass shooting at Florida State University last year. Reports suggest that the shooter consulted the chatbot prior to the incident. Additionally, OpenAI is facing a civil suit from the family of a victim from that attack, although the company has consistently denied any responsibility for the events. An OpenAI spokesperson expressed their stance, stating, "While the mass shooting at Florida State University was a tragic event, ChatGPT is not at fault for this crime." This lawsuit is just one of many legal challenges OpenAI faces, as it recently concluded another case where co-founder Elon Musk had accused the company of straying from its initial mission to benefit humanity by shifting to a profit-driven model.
