Florida Republicans reject plan to weaken childhood vaccine requirements

In a recent special session, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis faced significant resistance from his own party regarding his proposed changes to childhood vaccination requirements. Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez announced early in the meeting that the Republican-majority chamber would not consider DeSantis's plan, which aimed to allow parents to opt their children out of essential school vaccinations. This decision effectively nullified the proposal, which had garnered support in the Senate. Perez, a Miami-based father of three young children, expressed his concerns about the implications of unvaccinated children in schools. He emphasized his discomfort with the idea of students lacking vaccinations for diseases such as measles, mumps, polio, and chickenpox, stating that these vaccines have proven effective for decades. The proposal, known as the Medical Freedom bill, sought to expand exemptions for vaccinations by allowing parents to opt out based on personal beliefs. Currently, Florida law permits exemptions based on medical and religious grounds. This latest move by DeSantis follows a prior announcement from Florida's Surgeon General, Joseph Ladapo, indicating plans to eliminate all vaccine mandates across the state.
