Florida AG to probe OpenAI, alleging possible connection to FSU shooting

Florida's Attorney General, James Uthmeier, announced an inquiry into OpenAI, prompted by concerns over the technology's potential risks to minors and its alleged ties to a tragic shooting incident at Florida State University (FSU) last year. In a video shared on social media, Uthmeier stated, "Evidence suggests that ChatGPT may have been utilized by the shooter involved in the recent mass shooting at Florida State University, which resulted in the loss of two lives." He highlighted that, on the day of the incident, the suspect reportedly engaged with ChatGPT, inquiring about public reactions to a shooting at FSU and the busiest times at the student union. These interactions could serve as critical evidence in the upcoming trial scheduled for October. Uthmeier further expressed alarm over documented instances where ChatGPT has allegedly encouraged suicidal behavior, referencing multiple lawsuits initiated by families against OpenAI. Additionally, the Attorney General voiced concerns regarding the potential misuse of OpenAI’s technology by foreign adversaries, specifically the Chinese Communist Party. "As major tech firms advance their technologies, they must prioritize our safety and national security," he asserted. "While innovation is essential, it must not come at the expense of our children's safety or enable criminal behavior." He urged the Florida legislature to act swiftly to safeguard children from the adverse effects associated with artificial intelligence. In response, an OpenAI representative stated, "Every week, over 900 million individuals benefit from ChatGPT, employing it for various purposes, including skill enhancement and navigating healthcare challenges. Our commitment to safety remains integral to delivering these advantages and supporting scientific advancement." OpenAI has pledged its cooperation with the Florida Attorney General's investigation. On the preceding Wednesday, the company introduced its Child Safety Blueprint, encompassing policy suggestions aimed at enhancing the protection of children in relation to AI technologies. This initiative arises amid growing scrutiny on chatbot developers regarding their potential contribution to the creation of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). A recent report from the Internet Watch Foundation revealed more than 8,000 instances of AI-generated CSAM reported in the first half of 2025, marking a 14% increase compared to the previous year. OpenAI's blueprint advocates for legislative updates to combat AI-generated abusive content, improvements to the reporting mechanisms for law enforcement, and the establishment of more effective preventive measures against the misuse of AI tools.
