James Uthmeier, the Attorney General of Florida, has taken to the social media platform X to voice serious allegations against OpenAI’s ChatGPT, claiming it has engaged in multiple instances of misconduct. This announcement comes as the company prepares for a potential initial public offering (IPO) later this year, which could see its valuation soar to nearly $1 trillion. In his video statement, Uthmeier expressed deep concerns regarding the handling of data and AI technology by OpenAI, warning that it could fall into the hands of adversaries, including the Chinese government. He highlighted the massive reach of ChatGPT, which boasts a staggering 900 million weekly users, emphasizing its substantial impact on the American populace. The Attorney General outlined grave accusations against OpenAI and its chatbot, linking them to harmful activities ranging from criminal behavior to child exploitation and even instances of encouraging suicide or self-harm. Notably, he claimed that ChatGPT may have been utilized in aiding a suspect involved in the recent tragic shooting at Florida State University, which resulted in two fatalities. Uthmeier underscored the necessity of ensuring that advancements in AI do not compromise public safety or security. He stated, "As big tech continues to roll out these innovations, they must prioritize our safety and ensure we are not headed towards an existential crisis." In his post on X, Uthmeier asserted, "Wrongdoers must be held accountable," signaling the seriousness of the investigation. Legal notices and subpoenas are expected to be dispatched to OpenAI as part of this inquiry. Additionally, Uthmeier has called on Florida legislators to enact laws that would safeguard children from potential AI-related dangers and to empower his office to take decisive action against such issues. These developments arise as OpenAI prepares for its IPO, with reports indicating it raised $122 billion in its last funding round, currently valuing the company at approximately $852 billion. Meanwhile, OpenAI's CFO, Sarah Friar, has voiced her apprehensions regarding the IPO timeline and the significant expenditures required for building the necessary AI infrastructure.
