Flipkart moves its headquarters back to India ahead of IPO

In a significant shift, Indian e-commerce leader Flipkart has reestablished its headquarters in India, moving from Singapore as it gears up for an anticipated initial public offering (IPO) in the near future. This relocation marks a return home for the company after over ten years of operating from overseas. Sources indicate that Flipkart is aiming for a stock market launch in India by the end of the financial year in March 2027. This decision aligns with the rapid growth of India's e-commerce sector, fueled by a burgeoning internet user base that has surpassed one billion subscribers. The trend of Indian startups repatriating their corporate structures is gaining traction, with companies like Zepto and Groww also relocating as they prepare to go public. Flipkart, which reached a gross merchandise value of approximately $30 billion in 2025, up from around $23 billion in 2021, boasts an impressive customer base of over 500 million and 1.6 million sellers nationwide. Its logistics service, Ekart, operates across more than 22,000 pin codes in India. Founded in Bengaluru in 2007, Flipkart was among several Indian startups that opted for overseas holding structures to attract foreign investment and navigate India's regulatory landscape more effectively. Walmart made a noteworthy investment in Flipkart in 2018, acquiring a majority stake for $16 billion. India's government has been proactively encouraging tech companies to list domestically, aiming for clearer regulations and simplified tax frameworks. Flipkart initially revealed its plans to shift back to India in April 2025, and by September, the restructuring had received preliminary approval from a Singapore court, with additional hearings held before India’s National Company Law Appellate Tribunal. A spokesperson for Flipkart stated, "This completes the redomiciliation of the Flipkart group to India, a significant milestone that reflects our deep and long-term commitment to the country."
