The anonymous social app that thinks it can work in Saudi Arabia

Fizz, a social app that allows users to post anonymously, has made its international debut in Saudi Arabia, marking a significant step in its global expansion strategy. Founded by Teddy Solomon and Ashton Cofer while they were still students at Stanford, Fizz aims to transition from a college-focused platform to a broader social media experience. The app's Global Fizz feed is designed to include users beyond just college campuses, and its launch in Saudi Arabia has exceeded expectations. After its quiet introduction in mid-March, Fizz quickly soared to the top of the App Store charts, achieving the number one spot overall within just 48 hours. In a recent statement to TechCrunch, Solomon reported that users sent over one million messages within the first week of the app's launch in the country. "We've always envisioned Fizz as a generational social product, rather than just a college app, and now we're executing on that vision," he expressed. The journey to Saudi Arabia began when Solomon attended a conference in Dubai and recognized the potential for Fizz's growth in the Middle East. Subsequently, Fizz's marketing analyst, Michael Fonseca, relocated to Saudi Arabia to build connections and gain a deeper understanding of local culture, facilitating the app's successful launch. According to Solomon, the response has been overwhelmingly positive, with a booming social scene in the region, highlighted by the popularity of platforms like Snapchat and TikTok. The current cultural landscape in Saudi Arabia is evolving, thanks in part to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's initiative, Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the economy away from oil dependence. This vision includes significant social reforms, such as allowing women to drive and boosting investments in technology. However, despite these changes, the country remains an absolute monarchy with strict controls over free speech. For instance, recent actions taken against activists highlight the potential risks of operating a platform that encourages open dialogue. As Fizz navigates this complex environment, Solomon acknowledges the need for caution. The monarchy could monitor the app and impose restrictions on content deemed inappropriate. While he has not laid out a specific strategy for dealing with potential government scrutiny, he emphasized the company's commitment to strict moderation. Fizz has invested in Arabic natural language processing tools to enhance its content oversight and has enlisted hundreds of volunteer moderators from the Saudi community to assist in maintaining a safe environment. The approach mirrors Fizz's strategy on college campuses, where it combines AI moderation tools with community input for informed decision-making. "There's a strong sense of community pride among our users in Saudi Arabia, and they want to ensure the platform remains safe and respectful," Solomon concluded, highlighting the app's commitment to adapting to local norms while fostering user engagement.
