Mozilla is taking a significant step to accommodate users who prefer to limit their interaction with artificial intelligence in their web browsing experience. The company announced that with the upcoming release of Firefox 148 on February 24, users will have the option to completely disable all current and future generative AI features in the browser. The new update will feature an 'AI controls' section in the desktop settings, allowing users to toggle the 'Block AI enhancements' option. Activating this setting will ensure that users do not receive any pop-ups or reminders regarding existing or forthcoming AI functionalities. Additionally, Firefox will give users the flexibility to manage individual AI features, which include translation tools for browsing in preferred languages, alt text support in PDFs, AI-enhanced tab organization, link previews, and an AI chatbot accessible in the sidebar. In a recent blog post, Mozilla emphasized the diverse preferences of its community regarding AI, stating, "AI is changing the web, and people want very different things from it." The company acknowledged feedback from users who prefer to avoid AI entirely, while others seek genuinely useful AI tools. This initiative is part of Mozilla's commitment to providing choice to its users. This announcement comes on the heels of Anthony Enzor-DeMeo's appointment as CEO of Mozilla in December, during which he highlighted the company's intention to invest in AI while ensuring that these features remain optional. He asserted that "AI should always be a choice" and stressed the importance of transparency regarding how features operate and the value they provide. As the browser market evolves, Mozilla faces increasing competition from emerging companies such as Perplexity, Arc, OpenAI, and Opera. While the company plans to introduce new AI functionalities, it also remains dedicated to transparency and ethical practices. Recent reports indicate that Mozilla President Mark Surman is working to create a coalition of tech startups, developers, and public-interest technologists focused on building trust in AI and regulating the influence of major players like OpenAI and Anthropic. Mozilla is prepared to allocate approximately $1.4 billion from its reserves to support tech businesses and nonprofits, including its own, that promote transparency in AI and responsible oversight.
