Mozilla’s Firefox adds Perplexity’s AI answer engine as a new search option

Mozilla has taken an innovative step by integrating the AI answer engine Perplexity into its Firefox browser. Unlike other web browsers that are embedding AI deeply into their platforms, Firefox is allowing its users the flexibility to select Perplexity as an alternative search engine directly within the browser they are already familiar with. On Tuesday, Mozilla announced this significant development, highlighting that users can now opt for AI-powered search to enhance their web experience. Previously, the integration was in a testing phase, limited to specific markets such as the U.S., U.K., and Germany. However, due to positive feedback from users, the company has decided to expand Perplexity's availability to all desktop users globally, with plans to roll it out on mobile devices in the coming months. Once users enable Perplexity, they will enjoy a conversational search interface that presents answers alongside citations, moving away from the traditional list of web links typically offered by search engines like Google. This functionality will be accessible through the unified search button located in the Firefox address bar, allowing for quick switching between search engines as desired. Additionally, users can set their preferred default search provider in the browser's settings. Mozilla has indicated that if the pilot with Perplexity proves successful, the company may explore adding additional AI-driven search options in the future. This initiative aligns with Mozilla's commitment to user privacy, as Perplexity guarantees not to share or sell personal data. In conjunction with this AI feature, Mozilla also announced the broad availability of browser profiles, a feature that enables users to manage different browsing environments for various purposes such as work, school, or personal use. Furthermore, the company is actively testing visual search capabilities with Google Lens for those who choose Google as their default search engine on desktop devices.
