Firefly leans into its defense ambitions with $855M SciTec acquisition

Firefly Aerospace has made a significant move in the defense sector by announcing its acquisition of SciTec, a defense analytics firm, for approximately $855 million in a mix of cash and stock. This strategic investment aims to establish Firefly as a key player in the national security market and is expected to finalize by the end of 2025. In this deal, Firefly will pay around $300 million in cash along with $555 million in new shares. SciTec, headquartered in Princeton, specializes in missile-warning systems, space domain awareness tools, and analytical services tailored for defense and intelligence clientele. Notably, earlier this year, the U.S. Space Force awarded SciTec a substantial $259 million contract for developing a ground system designated for missile-detection satellites. As of June, SciTec reported an annual revenue of $164 million, showcasing its robust position in the industry. This acquisition comes shortly after Firefly's IPO, which valued the company at nearly $10 billion, and represents a strategic shift from its traditional role as a launch and spacecraft manufacturer to a vertically integrated defense contractor. The integration of SciTec is expected to enhance Firefly's offerings, particularly as the Pentagon actively seeks commercial partners for advanced missile tracking and early-warning systems, including initiatives like the “Golden Dome” missile-defense program. Following the completion of the acquisition, SciTec will function as a subsidiary of Firefly, continuing under the leadership of its current CEO, Jim Lisowski.
