Civilization VIIteam at Firaxis Games faces layoffs

Firaxis Games, the studio behind the development of the latest installment in the popular Civilization series, is experiencing layoffs. The situation became public when a former employee shared her job loss on LinkedIn, prompting coverage from Game Developer, followed by confirmation from publisher 2K Games. A spokesperson for 2K Games acknowledged the reductions, stating, "We can confirm there was a staff reduction today at Firaxis Games, as the studio restructures and optimizes its development process for adaptability, collaboration, and creativity." However, the exact number of employees affected has not been disclosed. The recent titles from Firaxis, including 2022's Marvel's Midnight Suns and the newly released Civilization VII, have struggled to capture the excitement of their predecessors, suffering from lackluster sales and player engagement. Upon its release, Civilization VII encountered several bugs and user interface issues that disappointed gamers. Significant changes in gameplay mechanics also led to mixed reactions from long-time fans of the franchise. In response to player feedback, Firaxis has been actively working on patches to address some of the contentious elements introduced in Civilization VII. Unfortunately, the game has not been able to match the popularity of earlier versions like Civilization VI or even Civilization V, falling short in terms of concurrent users on Steam and viewership on Twitch.
