Employees who don't vibe code are 'probably underperforming,' fintech startup product chief says

In a striking announcement, the chief product officer of Ramp, a fintech startup valued at $32 billion, emphasized the critical need for employees to harness AI-assisted coding tools. Geoff Charles, speaking on the podcast "Behind the Craft," stated that in today’s competitive landscape, being 'AI-native' is not just an advantage but a necessity. Charles asserted that any employee not utilizing AI tools like Claude code is likely falling behind. He outlined a proficiency framework, categorizing employees into levels based on their AI integration skills. At the lowest level, termed level zero, are those who occasionally use ChatGPT. Meanwhile, level three represents employees who are adept systems builders. Level one and two include individuals who have developed custom GPTs and those who can automate tasks through app development. "Our goal is to elevate everyone within the organization up the proficiency ladder," Charles stated. He warned that those remaining at level zero would likely not have a long-term future at Ramp, highlighting the importance of a growth mindset for career advancement. Currently, Charles noted that AI contributes to 50% of the company's coding efforts, with expectations to rise to 80% by March. As companies across the tech sector pivot towards AI-centric workforces, Ramp is not alone in this strategy. Recent layoffs at firms like Block and Atlassian were attributed to shifts in skills demand due to AI advancements. Atlassian’s CEO, Mike Cannon-Brookes, acknowledged in a communication to staff that AI is reshaping the skill sets and roles needed within the company. Moreover, other organizations, such as Google and Checkr, are also encouraging employees to integrate AI tools into their workflows, emphasizing that their usage may impact performance evaluations. Checkr's CEO, Daniel Yanisse, reported impressive results, with 95% of employees utilizing AI prompting daily after implementing dedicated AI initiatives. As the industry undergoes this transformation, the call to adapt and thrive in an AI-driven environment is more urgent than ever.
