“Never put all your eggs in one basket,” fintech CTO warns after Anthropic suspends 60+ accounts

In the rapidly evolving landscape of startups, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an indispensable tool. However, dependence on a single AI service can pose significant risks. This reality struck a fintech company named Belo when it faced a sudden suspension of over 60 accounts with Claude, an AI tool developed by Anthropic. Pato Molina, Belo’s Chief Technology Officer, took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his frustration and caution other startups about the dangers of relying on one provider. "Never put all your eggs in one basket," he advised, following the incident that disrupted essential workflows and access to past conversations for the entire organization. Molina criticized the lack of communication from Anthropic, stating, "@claudeai you took down our entire organization without any apparent reason. The only way to appeal the decision is by filling out a Google Form? Very bad UX and customer service." The suspension stemmed from Anthropic's automated systems detecting potential violations of its Usage Policy. In a message shared by Molina, the company explained that the high volume of signals associated with Belo's account led to the revocation of access to Claude. The lack of clarity about which specific policy was breached left Molina and his team bewildered, as they received no prior warning before the suspension occurred. In a follow-up post, Molina emphasized the importance of diversifying AI platforms within a business to ensure operational continuity during service disruptions. He noted that while having multiple AI options can mitigate risks, it also introduces new challenges, including the need for extensive training and complex integrations between different systems. After more than 15 hours of uncertainty, Anthropic restored access to Belo's accounts, labeling the incident a "false positive." However, this event sparked a broader discussion about the implications of relying solely on one AI provider. Molina reiterated the lessons learned, underscoring the critical need for startups to consider operational resilience in their technology strategies.
