Figma's stock experienced a remarkable increase of over 15% on Monday, driven by a significant endorsement from Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. During the annual DevDay conference held in San Francisco, Altman showcased how Figma's technology could be seamlessly integrated with ChatGPT, which boasts an impressive user base of over 800 million each month. In his presentation, Altman highlighted the potential for third-party applications to connect with OpenAI's Apps SDK, a software development framework designed for enhanced functionality. He explained, "When using ChatGPT, users will be able to find an app by simply requesting it by name." For instance, he illustrated how users could create a product flow sketch and subsequently instruct Figma to convert that sketch into a functional diagram. The Figma application would then take over to fulfill that request. This stock rally marked one of the most substantial surges for Figma since its public debut on the New York Stock Exchange in July. The company is actively enhancing its capabilities for app and website design through the integration of generative AI models from OpenAI and other sources. Altman noted that subscribers utilizing products linked to the Apps SDK can continue their work without exiting their ChatGPT sessions. He also mentioned that users collaborating on Figma can easily access the FigJam tool to further develop their ideas. The Apps SDK is built on the Model Context Protocol, an open standard introduced by OpenAI competitor Anthropic last year. Altman informed attendees that software developers would have the opportunity to submit their applications for review starting in 2025. He stated that OpenAI aims to create numerous avenues for revenue generation through third-party integrations. Just last week, OpenAI unveiled a new feature allowing users to purchase items on Etsy directly through ChatGPT.
