Figma adds code layers, support for animations, more AI features in new update

Figma has rolled out a significant update that introduces a new code layer, support for animations, and enhanced AI capabilities, significantly enriching the design platform's functionality. The integration of code layers marks a pivotal advancement for Figma, enabling designers, product managers, and developers to collaborate more effectively. This feature allows teams to clone repositories and translate code into design layers for testing, streamlining the workflow between coding and design. Yuhki Yamashita, Figma's chief product officer, emphasized the importance of this feature, stating that it encourages rapid exploration of ideas without the constraint of producing perfect code. "The multiplayer canvas is a powerful environment for experimentation, where the quality of code is less critical," he explained. In addition to code layers, Figma now supports animations, transitions, and 3D transformations directly within the platform. Previously, designers had to rely on external software to create animations and then convert them for use in Figma. This update allows for seamless integration of animations and transitions, enhancing the overall design process. Furthermore, users can leverage AI to generate various assets, including shader effects and fills, adding another layer of creativity to their projects. Figma is also working to improve its integration with Weavy, a node-based tool it acquired last year, which facilitates workflow comparisons. Users can expect to generate Weavy workflows directly within Figma in an upcoming update. Additionally, Figma is enriching its AI assistant's capabilities, enabling users to create custom skills through text prompts that AI agents can utilize. The platform now supports connections to tools like Notion, Granola, Excel, and GitHub, allowing users to provide the AI with context for more effective assistance. The introduction of custom plug-ins, such as layout generators and vector path tracers, is another exciting feature that will empower users to personalize their design experience.
