Figma launches new AI-powered object removal and image extension

Figma has introduced exciting new AI-driven features aimed at revolutionizing image editing within its design platform. Among these enhancements are tools that allow users to effortlessly remove and isolate objects from images and extend backgrounds, streamlining the design process significantly. The company emphasizes that these capabilities will eliminate the need for exporting images to external editing tools and then importing them back, saving users valuable time. Figma points out that while generative models like Nano Banana excel at creating images, designers often require detailed editing tools that function without text prompts. One of the standout improvements is the upgraded lasso tool, which now enables users to select objects for removal or isolation with ease. When an object is repositioned, the original image maintains its integrity, including background details and color consistency. Users can also manipulate various aspects of the selected object, such as lighting, shadow, and focus, providing greater control over their designs. In addition to object manipulation, Figma has rolled out an image expansion feature. This tool is particularly useful for adjusting designs to fit specific formats, such as transforming a 1×1 image into a web or mobile banner. This innovation helps designers avoid the tedious task of cropping and rearranging elements repeatedly. To enhance usability, Figma is consolidating all its image editing tools into a single, accessible toolbar. This will allow users to select objects, alter background colors, and add annotations or text more conveniently. Notably, Figma has recognized that background removal is one of the most frequently performed tasks on its platform, which is why it will occupy a prominent position in the new toolbar. While competitors like Adobe and Canva have offered object removal features for some time, Figma is now stepping up to provide these essential tools. The new image editing capabilities are currently available on Figma Design and Draw, with plans to extend them across all Figma tools in the coming year. This launch coincides with Adobe's announcement of similar features within ChatGPT, marking a significant moment in the evolving landscape of digital design tools. However, it remains uncertain whether these new functions will be accessible to users leveraging Figma through OpenAI’s platform.
