Figma acquires AI-powered media generation company Weavy

Figma has made a significant move in the design industry by acquiring Weavy, a startup that specializes in AI-driven image and video generation. This strategic acquisition will see Weavy operate under a new brand, Figma Weave, as part of Figma's ongoing expansion. The deal involves 20 Weavy employees joining Figma, although specifics regarding the financial terms of the acquisition remain undisclosed. Founded in 2024 and based in Tel Aviv, Weavy successfully raised $4 million in a seed funding round this past June, backed by notable investors including Entrée Capital, Designer Fund, Founder Collective, and Fiverr's Micha Kaufman. Initially, Weavy will function as an independent product, with plans for future integration into the broader Figma platform. Weavy's innovative web tools allow users to merge different AI models to produce high-quality images and videos tailored for product mockups and branding. Users have access to a range of editing features, enabling them to make adjustments to lighting, colors, and angles through intuitive prompts. Starting from a simple image prompt on an infinite canvas, they can explore outputs from various models, select images, and generate videos, all while utilizing advanced editing tools to refine their creations. The platform supports a variety of AI models, including Seedance, Sora, and Veo for video, and Flux, Ideogram, Nano-Banana, and Seedream for image creation. Figma CEO Dylan Field praised Weavy's approach, highlighting its blend of simplicity and power that enhances user experience in AI generation. He stated, "This node-based approach brings a new level of craft and control to AI generation, allowing for creative exploration and iteration. Weavy has truly inspired us with their innovative tools." The demand for AI-infused design platforms continues to grow, as evidenced by recent acquisitions in the sector. Earlier this month, Perplexity, an AI search platform, acquired the team from the Sequoia-backed design platform Visual Electric. Additionally, Krea raised $83 million in funding this April, attracting investments from prominent firms like Bain Capital and a16z, reflecting the vibrant landscape of AI-driven design solutions.
