Figma partners with OpenAI to bake in support for Codex

Figma has announced a strategic integration with OpenAI's Codex, an AI-driven coding tool, allowing users to seamlessly create and modify designs directly within their coding environments. This collaboration follows a recent partnership with Anthropic to incorporate Claude Code, showcasing Figma's commitment to enhancing user experience across platforms. The integration empowers users to transition effortlessly between designing in Figma and coding in Codex, facilitated by Figma's Mobile Context Protocol (MCP) server. Previously, users had to import design elements from Figma, Figma Make, or FigJam into Codex for coding purposes. Loredan Crisan, Figma's chief design officer, emphasized that this integration enables teams to expand on their best ideas by merging coding prowess with Figma's creative, collaborative, and versatile canvas. Codex product lead Alexander Embiricos highlighted that this collaboration broadens Codex's appeal, making it accessible to a diverse range of builders and organizations, regardless of their primary role as designers or engineers. This allows engineers to iterate visually while remaining immersed in their workflows, and designers to engage with real implementations without needing to become full-time programmers. OpenAI originally launched Codex as a command-line assistant last year to rival Anthropic's acclaimed Claude Code. The tool has since been integrated into ChatGPT, and a dedicated MacOS app was released earlier this month, achieving over a million downloads in its first week. OpenAI reported that Codex is now being utilized by more than a million users weekly. Figma has established itself as a key partner for OpenAI, being one of the first to launch an application within ChatGPT back in October 2025.
