Nvidia, Bill Gates-backed robotics startup FieldAI hits $2 billion valuation after recent raise

FieldAI, a robotics startup supported by Bill Gates, has successfully raised $405 million through two funding rounds, gaining backing from Nvidia's venture capital division and the family office of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. This significant influx of capital arrives at a pivotal time, as described by founder and CEO Ali Agha, who noted that both software and hardware are experiencing a transformative phase. Agha emphasized the company's growth trajectory, stating, 'This funding announcement is a response to customer demand.' The latest funding round has elevated the startup's valuation to $2 billion, according to a source familiar with the developments who preferred to remain anonymous. In addition to NVentures and Bezos Expeditions, the funding involved contributions from prominent firms such as Khosla Ventures, Temasek, Canaan Partners, and Intel Capital. Previous investments were also made by Samsung and Gates Frontier, the investment fund of Microsoft’s founder. The Irvine, California-based FieldAI revealed that their funding rounds were oversubscribed, with many investors proactively seeking opportunities to invest. The timing of this funding is critical as the robotics sector witnesses a surge in demand for enhanced artificial intelligence capabilities aimed at improving operational efficiency. For context, Gecko Robotics, another notable player in the field, raised $125 million in June, achieving a valuation exceeding $1 billion. FieldAI employs a team with backgrounds from Deepmind, SpaceX, Amazon, Tesla Autopilot, and NASA, focusing on developing models that facilitate robot control across various industries, including construction, energy, and logistics. Agha highlighted the company’s unique advantage: the ability to easily adapt their technology to different environments while minimizing the necessary customer intervention, thereby allowing for rapid scalability of robotic systems. With a decade of experience at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Agha specializes in robotics autonomy and physical AI. He shared that FieldAI has expanded its workforce by over 100 positions in recent months, responding to increasing customer demands while tackling labor shortages and enhancing safety efficiency.
