Everything we know about Ferrari’s first electric vehicle

In Maranello, Italy, Ferrari is on the cusp of a significant evolution with the upcoming launch of its first electric vehicle, the Ferrari Elettrica. This ambitious project is being developed at the state-of-the-art E-Building, a cutting-edge facility that is one of Italy's first LEED-certified factories. This modern space is designed for versatility, allowing the assembly of a variety of models within Ferrari's lineup. As anticipation builds for its debut next year, Ferrari has shared some exciting details about the Elettrica's powertrain and chassis. However, enthusiasts will have to wait to see the vehicle's interior and exterior design. Initially, Ferrari explored options for an all-electric two-seater and a model with limited rear seating, but ultimately determined that neither configuration would deliver the desired performance, given the additional weight. Instead, the decision favored a four-seater design. The innovative battery pack enables a lower center of gravity by 3.1 inches (80 mm) compared to traditional internal combustion engines, while also reducing the polar moment of inertia by 20%. Despite these enhancements, the Elettrica is not expected to be a bulky car; its wheelbase measures 116.5 inches (2,960 mm), slightly shorter than that of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, and features notably short front and rear overhangs. In a commitment to sustainability, Ferrari has revealed that 75% of the aluminum utilized in the chassis and body panels is recycled, leading to a reduction of 6.7 tons of CO2 emissions per vehicle. Ferrari's experience with electric powertrains dates back to its integration of hybrid technologies in Formula 1 racing since 2009. While the motors for the Elettrica are not direct adaptations of their F1 counterparts, they carry a distinct influence, such as the innovative Hallbach arrangement of magnets in the rotor, enhancing performance by concentrating the magnetic field. The development of the Elettrica marks a pivotal moment for Ferrari, as it embraces electric technology while staying true to its performance-driven legacy.
