There’s no sudden acceleration problem with Tesla, feds say

Federal regulators have determined that one-pedal driving in Tesla electric vehicles is not responsible for instances of sudden acceleration while parked. This conclusion comes after years of sporadic allegations that Tesla cars exhibit unexpected acceleration when they should remain stationary. The phenomenon, referred to as 'sudden unintended acceleration,' has raised ongoing debates about whether the issue stems from human error or engineering flaws. Over the years, various engineers have suggested potential causes and have petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to mandate a recall of Tesla vehicles. However, these appeals have typically been unsuccessful, as highlighted by the NHTSA's recent announcement that it will not require a recall of all Tesla electric vehicles produced since 2013. Electric vehicles (EVs) utilize regenerative braking to recapture energy when slowing down, converting kinetic energy into stored energy rather than dissipating it as heat through traditional brakes. While many battery EVs and hybrids employ a brake-by-wire system that merges both braking methods, Tesla's design relies solely on hydraulic friction brakes, leading to a distinct driving experience. In Tesla's case, the regenerative braking system activates when drivers release the accelerator pedal, a feature often referred to as one-pedal driving. This method has both proponents and detractors among EV drivers. Some appreciate the ability to slow down without shifting between pedals, while others find it less intuitive. A recent petition to the NHTSA from a Greek engineer suggested that this driving mode may confuse Tesla operators, leading to the reported incidents of unexpected acceleration.
