Richard Pazdur, the newly appointed head of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, has announced his retirement only three weeks into the role, according to various news sources. An oncologist by training and a veteran of the agency since 1999, Pazdur was expected to bring stability to an FDA that has faced significant challenges during the latter part of the Trump administration. Pazdur stepped into the position on November 11, following the departure of George Tidmarsh, who left under a cloud of an investigation and a lawsuit related to allegations of professional misconduct. This tumultuous backdrop led some investors to label the FDA as a “clown show,” while drug industry representatives criticized the agency as being erratic and unpredictable. Initially, Pazdur’s appointment was met with optimism from agency insiders, industry stakeholders, and patient advocacy groups. However, tensions quickly escalated. Within days of his arrival, he raised serious concerns regarding the legality and potential public health implications of plans proposed by FDA Commissioner Marty Makary to streamline agency processes. Reports from The Washington Post revealed that Pazdur opposed Makary’s suggestions to reduce the number of studies required for drug-related decisions, including label modifications. Additionally, Pazdur expressed worries that the push to expedite drug review timelines lacked transparency and could violate legal standards. He also disagreed with the exclusion of career scientists from certain drug evaluation processes that were deemed to be politically prioritized. This series of conflicts ultimately led to Pazdur's swift exit from the agency, leaving many to speculate about the future direction of the FDA.
