RFK Jr. forces FDA to reconsider 12 unproven peptides after 2023 ban

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced upcoming meetings to reconsider its stance on 12 peptides previously classified as unsafe. These discussions will take place over two days in July, with an additional meeting slated for February 2027. Notably, these meetings are not expected to include any new substantial safety or efficacy data for the FDA advisors to evaluate. The push to lift restrictions comes from Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the Health Secretary known for his anti-vaccine stance, who has openly expressed support for these unproven peptides. Peptides are short chains of amino acids linked by peptide bonds, and while some are FDA-approved for conditions such as diabetes and obesity, many others are marketed without scientific backing for various ailments, including anti-aging and cosmetic benefits. Kennedy, lacking a formal background in science or medicine, has actively promoted these peptides, even claiming personal success in using them for injury treatment during a recent podcast appearance. He has previously criticized the FDA's policies, vowing to end what he describes as a “war on peptides.” In a social media update, Kennedy framed the scheduled discussions as a necessary step towards reestablishing scientific integrity and accountability. However, skepticism surrounds the advisory panel that will assess these peptides. The Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee (PCAC), responsible for the review, currently has only three voting members and one representative from the industry, with six positions unfilled, including the chairperson role. This limited representation raises concerns about the thoroughness of the evaluation process as the FDA navigates this contentious issue.
