Baby botulism outbreak: FDA still doesn’t know cause—or how to prevent it

This week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a statement regarding the unsettling outbreak of botulism in infants, attributed to contaminated formula produced by ByHeart. Critics have labeled the FDA’s findings as “underwhelming,” as the agency has yet to determine how the contamination occurred or how to prevent future incidents. The FDA acknowledged that its investigation is still in progress and is primarily focused on the ingredients involved. Meanwhile, three companies implicated in the situation are engaged in a blame game, with none stepping forward to accept responsibility for the contamination. The outbreak, which first came to light in early November, was officially declared over by both the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on February 26. The incident resulted in 48 infants being hospitalized across 17 states, with some still facing recovery challenges months after the life-threatening illness. The FDA's inquiry has traced the outbreak to the bacteria Clostridium botulinum, known for producing resilient spores found in soil and other environments. These spores can thrive in vulnerable infants' digestive systems, leading to the production of a neurotoxin that causes severe paralysis. Genetic analysis revealed that strains of C. botulinum from some affected infants closely matched those found in ByHeart’s formula, which were in turn linked to powdered whole milk sourced from a Nevada facility operated by Dairy Farmers of America. The liquid milk used in this process came from a California supplier, Organic West, which sold the resulting powdered milk to ByHeart. The FDA's summary indicates that the contaminated products can be traced back to eight specific whole milk lots originating from 33 fluid milk lots supplied by Organic West.
