Second carcass-eating fly species cleared by FDA for maggot wound therapy

The FDA has officially approved a second species of fly larvae for use in maggot wound therapy, marking a significant advancement in the field of medical treatment. This announcement comes from Cuprina Holdings, a Singapore-based company, which has introduced its therapeutic larvae under the brand name MediFly Maggots. With this latest approval, Cuprina positions itself as the sole provider with FDA clearance for two different fly larvae species. The newly approved species is Lucilia cuprina, commonly known as the Australian sheep blowfly, closely related to the existing FDA-approved species, Lucilia sericata, or the common green bottle fly. The latter has been widely used in maggot debridement therapy (MDT) since it received clearance in 2004. Cuprina's CEO, David Quek, expressed excitement over the dual FDA clearance, stating, "This anchors our wound-care platform in one of the world’s most demanding regulatory markets and gives us a defensible edge as we continue to build our portfolio." Importantly, the company has not claimed any significant therapeutic differences between the two treatments, highlighting that they cater to different market needs. While Lucilia sericata enjoys familiarity in Western medical practices, Lucilia cuprina is expected to have a stronger presence in regions such as Australia, Africa, Asia, and parts of the Americas. Ronald Sherman, Cuprina's Medical and Scientific Director and a long-time advocate for maggot therapy, hailed this development as a positive step for MDT. He remarked, "Adding a second FDA-cleared species strengthens the entire field, providing clinicians and patients with more options for effective wound care."
