Skydance deal allows Trump’s FCC to “censor speech” and “silence dissent” on CBS

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has greenlit Skydance's substantial $8 billion acquisition of Paramount, which includes CBS. This decision has ignited intense criticism from the FCC's sole Democratic commissioner, Anna Gomez, who argues that the approval imposes unprecedented constraints on editorial freedom at CBS. Gomez voiced her concerns, stating that the FCC's requirements for Skydance represent an overreach that threatens the First Amendment and journalistic integrity. She described the agency's actions as a means to exert control over newsroom decisions, fundamentally altering the landscape of media freedom in the United States. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr defended the commission's stance, asserting that Skydance has committed to ensuring its programming reflects a wide range of political and ideological perspectives. He contended that these measures are essential to restore public confidence in mainstream media, particularly amid ongoing accusations from conservatives of bias against former President Trump. As part of the agreement, an ombudsman will be appointed for a two-year period to oversee CBS's reporting, with the aim of ensuring it remains fair and factual. Any grievances regarding perceived bias will be escalated to the president of the newly formed Paramount. However, Gomez warned that this arrangement could have dire implications for press freedom, claiming that it amounts to a capitulation to the Trump administration's agenda. She accused the FCC of leveraging its authority to pressure Paramount into compromising its journalistic independence. This controversy highlights the ongoing tensions in the media landscape, particularly regarding the treatment of dissenting voices and the influence of political power on news reporting.
