Russian hacking suspect wanted by the FBI arrested on Thai resort island

BANGKOK — Authorities have apprehended a Russian individual on the Thai island of Phuket, wanted by the FBI for his alleged involvement in cyberattacks targeting both U.S. and European government entities. The 35-year-old suspect, who entered Thailand on October 30 at Phuket Airport, was arrested earlier this month at his hotel and is currently being held as extradition proceedings are considered. While the suspect's identity has not been officially released, Russian state media identified him as Denis Obrezko from Stavropol. Reports indicate that his family is contesting his extradition to the United States following his arrest on November 6. The U.S. Department of Justice has declined to provide comments regarding the extradition process or any related details. Similarly, officials from the U.S. State Department and American representatives in Thailand have remained silent on the matter. The Russian Foreign Ministry and their embassy in Thailand also did not issue any statements, although the consul general in Phuket, Yegor Ivanov, confirmed to Russian news agency Tass that they were informed of the arrest related to an information technology crime. According to Ivanov, the suspect was arrested on November 6 and quickly moved to Bangkok. Ilya Ilyin, a senior figure in the Russian embassy’s consular section, mentioned that embassy staff visited the detained individual and are facilitating communication with his family. Thailand's Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau stated that the arrest was made possible due to an FBI tip regarding the suspect, described as a “world-class hacker.” During the raid at his hotel, police confiscated several electronic devices, including laptops and mobile phones, with FBI agents present at the time of the arrest. There have been claims of another Russian hacker tied to military intelligence being detained in Phuket shortly after, but Thai police have confirmed that only one arrest took place. The formal extradition request has been submitted, although the duration of the process remains uncertain.
