The FBI has hit a significant hurdle in its investigation involving a Washington Post reporter's iPhone, which was safeguarded by Apple's Lockdown Mode when agents seized it during a raid. According to a recent court filing by the U.S. government, the Bureau managed to access the reporter's work laptop by having her use her fingerprint on the MacBook Pro’s sensor. This incident unfolded on January 14 at the home of journalist Hannah Natanson in Virginia, where FBI agents executed a search warrant related to a Pentagon contractor suspected of leaking classified information. During the raid, they confiscated an iPhone 13 belonging to the Post, two MacBook Pros—one owned by the Post and another by Natanson—a 1TB portable hard drive, a voice recorder, and a Garmin watch. The government is particularly interested in accessing Natanson’s Signal messages, which she uses for encrypted communication with a contact list of 1,100 current and former government employees. While some of these messages were visible on her work laptop, the iPhone remains locked due to its enhanced security features. The Justice Department's filing, presented in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, also addresses a motion by both the Post and Natanson requesting the return of the seized devices. A federal magistrate had previously issued an order preventing the government from further searching the devices until a ruling is made. The filing noted that when the iPhone was seized, it was found powered on and charging, but in 'Lockdown' mode. Following the seizure, the devices were transported to the FBI's Washington field office, where the Computer Analysis Response Team (CART) began the process of preserving the stored information.
