In a significant move against cybercrime, the FBI announced on Monday that it has successfully dismantled a large-scale phishing operation believed to have affected over 17,000 individuals across the globe. This operation, known as W3LL, had its website seized by the authorities, which now displays a notice confirming the FBI's involvement. Collaborating with Indonesian law enforcement, the FBI's operation led to the arrest of the suspected developer of W3LL, identified only by the initials G.L. Additionally, key internet domains associated with the phishing scheme were confiscated during the crackdown. The phishing kit offered by W3LL was available for purchase at $500, enabling cybercriminals to create counterfeit versions of legitimate websites. This tactic allowed them to capture sensitive information such as passwords and multi-factor authentication codes from unsuspecting users. The FBI revealed that this operation facilitated attempts to commit over $20 million in fraudulent activities. Furthermore, the W3LL marketplace also allegedly served as a platform for criminals to trade stolen credentials and gain access to compromised systems, leading to the sale of more than 25,000 hacked accounts. The FBI is continuing its efforts to combat cybercrime, but did not provide immediate comments when approached for further details.
