DOJ confirms FBI Director Kash Patel’s personal email was hacked

The Department of Justice has confirmed that Iranian-affiliated hackers have successfully breached FBI Director Kash Patel's personal email account. According to a report from Reuters, while the authenticity of the leaked emails could not be independently verified, they matched a Gmail address previously associated with Patel in data breaches documented on the dark web by the intelligence firm District 4 Labs. The Handala Hack Team, responsible for the breach, publicly celebrated their success by declaring that Patel's name would now join their list of hacked victims. They taunted Patel by sharing images of him with cigars and a jug of rum, alongside various documents reportedly dating from 2010 to 2019. In a mocking message, the hackers stated, "Soon you will realize that the FBI’s security was nothing more than a joke," as indicated in screenshots of their website that circulated widely on social media. This cyber intrusion follows recent actions by the DOJ, which had previously disrupted several websites associated with the hacking group. In response to the breach, Patel has vowed to pursue the perpetrators, referring to them as a collective of pro-Palestinian vigilante hackers. He has detailed four attacks claimed by the group this month and announced rewards of up to $10 million for information leading to the identification of its members. "Iran thought they could hide behind fake websites and keyboard threats to terrorize Americans and silence dissidents," Patel stated. He emphasized that the FBI is committed to dismantling the group’s operations and will utilize the full weight of American law enforcement to hold them accountable.
