FBI fights leaks by seizing Washington Post reporter’s phone, laptops, and watch

In a dramatic turn of events, the FBI executed a search warrant at the home of Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson, seizing her personal and work devices as part of an investigation into alleged leaks of classified information from a Pentagon contractor. The operation took place early Wednesday morning in Virginia, where agents confiscated Natanson's phone, two laptops—one personal and one issued by the newspaper—and a Garmin watch. While investigators informed Natanson that she is not the target of the inquiry, the implications of the search have raised alarm within the journalistic community. Natanson is known for her use of encrypted messaging through Signal to communicate with numerous government contacts, reportedly numbering over 1,100 current and former officials. The Washington Post revealed that the FBI's actions come alongside a subpoena issued to the publication, seeking information related to the same government contractor involved in the case. Matt Murray, the Executive Editor of the Post, expressed deep concern in an internal email, labeling the FBI's visit as an "extraordinary, aggressive action" that brings to light significant issues surrounding constitutional protections for journalistic work. According to reports, the investigation is centered on Aurelio Perez-Lugones, a Maryland system administrator with top-secret clearance, who is accused of improperly handling classified intelligence reports. Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed that this search was executed at the request of the Department of War, underscoring the gravity of the situation. "The leaker is currently behind bars," Bondi stated in a social media post, emphasizing the seriousness of the alleged offenses.
