In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) is capable of code generation, image creation, and complex problem-solving, one significant challenge remains: instilling a sense of morality in these systems. To address this, prominent AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic are reaching out to religious leaders for insight into the ethical frameworks that could guide the future of AI development. Recently, executives from both companies convened with representatives of various faiths in New York for the first-ever 'Faith-AI Covenant' roundtable. This gathering was aimed at exploring how moral and religious principles could shape the ethical landscape of advanced AI technologies. The event comes amid rising global concerns regarding the implications of increasingly sophisticated AI models. Notable participants included leaders from the Hindu Temple Society of North America, the Baha’i International Community, the Sikh Coalition, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Organized by the Geneva-based Interfaith Alliance for Safer Communities, the meeting also sought to tackle broader issues such as extremism and human trafficking. Baroness Joanna Shields, a former executive at Google and Facebook involved in these discussions, emphasized the importance of this initiative. "This direct connection is crucial because those developing AI technology understand its potential and want to ensure it is utilized ethically," she stated. The overarching aim is to create a set of ethical norms and principles for AI, drawing insights from a diverse array of religious and cultural backgrounds, including Christianity, Sikhism, and Buddhism. However, this endeavor is not without its complications, as varying religions and cultures often possess distinct moral frameworks, making the quest for universal ethical guidelines for AI challenging. This initiative reflects a broader trend within the AI sector, where companies like Anthropic and Google DeepMind are increasingly engaging philosophers and ethics experts to align AI with human values. Earlier this year, Anthropic hosted a gathering of Christian leaders in San Francisco to discuss the moral direction for its AI chatbot, Claude. The company has highlighted its commitment to values-driven AI, stating in its 'Claude Constitution' that it aspires for Claude to act as a deeply ethical individual would in any situation. This underscores Anthropic's dedication to developing AI principles influenced by both religious and ethical expertise.
