Facebook wants your photos to train its AI and create edits

Facebook is inviting its users to grant access to their phone’s photo library, enabling the platform to propose AI-generated edits for images, including those not yet shared on the site. As reported by TechCrunch, this feature will pop up when users are crafting a new Story, prompting them to opt into 'cloud processing' for creative suggestions. By consenting to this feature, users allow Facebook to upload images from their camera roll to its servers consistently. The uploads are influenced by various factors such as time, location, and themes, leading to innovative outputs like collages, thematic edits, and restylings. Under Meta’s AI Terms of Service, users agree to let the company analyze their media, including facial features, through AI technology. This analysis is designed to facilitate new features that summarize image content, modify visuals, and create new material based on existing images. The terms also specify that Meta retains the right to 'retain and use' any personal data shared by users to tailor its AI-generated outputs. Additionally, the social media giant may review user interactions with the AI, with human oversight involved in this process. However, Meta has not provided detailed definitions of what constitutes personal information, only stating it includes data submitted as prompts or feedback. It is important to note that Meta has previously acknowledged utilizing data from Facebook and Instagram dating back to 2007 to enhance its generative AI models.
