Facebook’s AI can now suggest edits to the photos still on your phone

Facebook has rolled out a new feature that allows its Meta AI to recommend edits for photos saved on users' phones, which have not yet been shared. This exciting update is now available to all users in the United States and Canada. On Friday, the company announced that users can opt in to receive suggestions for sharing photos to their Facebook Feed and Stories, complete with AI enhancements. Originally tested over the summer, this feature prompts users to grant permission for cloud processing, enabling the AI to generate personalized creative ideas from their camera rolls. The feature aims to enhance user experience by proposing options such as collages, themed recaps, and even AI-generated restyling for special occasions like birthdays. To facilitate these suggestions, Facebook’s app continuously uploads images from users' devices to its cloud, allowing the AI to analyze the content and provide tailored recommendations. Meta assures users that their media will not be utilized for advertising purposes or to refine AI systems unless they decide to edit or share the suggested photos. Users have the flexibility to disable this feature at any time. However, by agreeing to Meta’s AI Terms of Service, users consent to have their photos and facial features evaluated by the AI, which can summarize image content, modify images, and create new visual content based on the original. Additionally, the AI uses metadata, such as the presence of people or objects, to enhance its suggestions, thereby gaining deeper insights into users' lives and relationships. This access to unshared photos could potentially give Meta a competitive edge in the AI landscape by enriching its database with user insights and innovative ideas. Users can manage these settings under the Preferences section of Facebook’s Settings. On the 'Camera roll sharing suggestions' page, they will find two toggles: one for enabling photo suggestions while using the app, and another for activating or deactivating cloud processing for AI-generated images. This initiative reflects Meta's commitment to leveraging its dominant position in social networking to advance its AI capabilities, having previously announced its plans to train its image recognition AI on publicly shared data from Facebook and Instagram.
