Facebook announces that all videos on its platform will soon be shared as reels

In a significant update announced on Tuesday, Facebook revealed that all videos shared on its platform will soon be categorized as reels, regardless of their duration or orientation. This change marks a shift in how users engage with video content, as previously, they could choose between video posts and reels. As part of this overhaul, Facebook will also rename the existing 'Video' tab to 'Reels.' The company assures users that this update will not alter the video recommendations they receive. In the coming months, video uploads will automatically be designated as reels, eliminating the need for users to make that choice themselves. Notably, the new format will not impose any length or style restrictions on the videos, addressing current limitations where reels are capped at 90 seconds. This move aims to streamline the video-sharing process on the platform, reflecting a trend already seen on Instagram, where posts under 15 minutes have been automatically converted to reels since 2022. Facebook elaborated in a blog post, stating, "Previously, you’d upload a video to Feed or post a reel using different creative flows and tools for each format. Now, we’re bringing these experiences together with a simplified publishing flow that gives you access to even more creative tools. We’ll also give you control over your audience settings for who sees your reels." However, this change could present challenges for some users, particularly those who prefer posting horizontal videos, as they may find their content converted to a vertical format. Additionally, mixing longer videos with shorter clips could diminish user experience. With the update, users will have a uniform audience setting for both Feed and reels. When they begin to post reels post-update, they will be prompted to confirm who can view their content: everyone, friends, or a selected group. Despite the changes, Facebook emphasizes that it will continue to support a diverse range of video content, whether short, long, or live. The company plans to roll out these changes gradually on a global scale over the next few months.
