In a significant move, Facebook Messenger's dedicated desktop application has officially ceased operations as of December 15, 2025. Users who previously relied on the app for Mac and Windows are now being redirected to the Facebook website to continue their messaging experience. Initially launched during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic, the desktop version of Messenger struggled to compete with business-centric platforms like Zoom, which offered superior video call capabilities and features such as screen sharing. The decline of the app's relevance within Meta became increasingly evident, especially following the company's announcement in October regarding its discontinuation. In recent years, Facebook has been integrating Messenger back into the main Facebook app, signaling a shift in strategy aimed at enhancing user engagement on its flagship social network. The desktop application underwent several changes, including a transition to a version built using Catalyst technology, which has faced criticism for not delivering a seamless user experience. Prior to this, the Mac app had transitioned from an Electron framework to a React Native Desktop application, according to insights from a former Meta software engineer. Meanwhile, the Windows version evolved into a progressive web app last year, which may have contributed to diminished demand for a standalone desktop application. As the shutdown approached, Meta advised users to set up a PIN to preserve their chat history before transitioning to the web platform. Users without a Facebook account will now be directed to Messenger.com, allowing them to continue accessing Messenger services without needing to create an account. For further guidance, Facebook has provided detailed information in its help center, catering specifically to both Mac and Windows users.
