In a significant move to bolster account security, Facebook has announced the upcoming rollout of passkey support for both Android and iOS devices. This new feature, revealed on Wednesday, aims to provide users with a more secure login method that significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access. Passkeys enhance security by necessitating physical access to the user’s mobile device, making remote hacking attempts much more challenging. Unlike traditional login methods that rely on usernames and passwords—which are often vulnerable to phishing attacks—passkeys utilize advanced biometric options like Face ID or Touch ID, a PIN, or even a physical security key for authentication. Moreover, Facebook plans to extend passkey functionality to its Messenger app in the coming months, allowing users to seamlessly access both platforms with the same passkey. This feature also includes the convenience of autofilling payment details while using Meta Pay. To begin using a passkey, users can select the new "passkey" option located in the Accounts Center within the Settings menu of the Facebook app. Even after setting up a passkey, users will still retain the ability to log in using traditional methods, such as passwords, ensuring access from devices that do not support the new technology. Facebook joins a growing list of major tech companies—including Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Google, PayPal, TikTok, WhatsApp, X, and GitHub—that have embraced passkey support over the past year, reflecting a significant shift towards stronger digital security measures.
